Exemplary treatment procedure for a typical IVF treatment

First, there is a non-binding discussion between the patient/parent and the attending physician – 60-90 minutes should be planned for this.

Open questions are answered in detail and the medical history is discussed.

In addition, the specific recommended course of treatment is discussed in detail in advance.

Following the initial consultation, the physician shares a treatment plan, including a cost estimate, as well as a consent form for treatment with the patient.

By taking a hormone preparation, the patient prevents her natural ovulation.

Up to 14 days later, the patient begins egg stimulation to mature several eggs in parallel, which will later be used for IVF.

In the course of hormonal stimulation, ultrasound examinations are performed to check the size and maturity of the developing oocytes.

The doctor injects the patient with certain drugs 9-11 days after the start of hormone treatment to induce ovulation.

Approximately 36 hours after the induction of ovulation, a so-called follicular puncture is performed to remove the matured oocytes from the patient.

The eggs are mixed with sperm from the partner (or donor) on the same day of egg collection.

The mixture is added to a nutrient liquid and placed in an incubator.

After a certain time in the incubator, the eggs are collected, examined, 1-2 eggs are selected for transfer. These selected oocytes mature once again in the incubator.

Between day 2 and 6 after fertilization, 1-2 embryos are transferred into the patient’s uterus.

A few days later, the patient can leave.

About 2 weeks after embryo transfer, it is possible to test whether the pregnancy was successfully induced.

Depending on the woman’s age and possible pre-existing conditions, check-ups during pregnancy are done in her gynecologist’s office or with the midwife at the normal regularity (about 1 check-up every 4 weeks after the 16th week of pregnancy, more towards the end of pregnancy).

If all goes well, the patient gives birth to a healthy baby about 9 months later.

From a financial point of view, infertility treatment in Greece is worthwhile for almost every treatment except Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).

The duration of treatment depends on the specific treatment desired – for IVF treatment, you should plan on staying in Greece for at least 14 days for treatment, as well as a lead time for hormonal stimulation of approximately one cycle.

You should plan on at least 6 weeks lead time before starting fertility treatment.

Depending on the service package you choose, we will either provide you with detailed directions or organize your local transfers with a chauffeur service.

If you need assistance communicating in English, we can arrange for a local translator to accompany you throughout your treatment, if desired.

This depends on the desired treatment. For some procedures, you may be able to travel unrestricted between individual treatment steps and a possible follow-up visit. Please consult your doctor about this.
